At the International Security Certification Board (ISCB), we offer a Basic Polygraph Examiner's Training Course designed to provide a thorough understanding of polygraph testing and credibility assessment. This course consists of a minimum of 400 hours, focusing on both theoretical and practical applications, ensuring that graduates are fully equipped to conduct polygraph examinations in government institutions, law enforcement, and international security projects.
ISCB’s training program is aligned with ISO/IEC 17024:2012 standards and focused on global best practices. Please note that participation in our training program is independent from the certification process. Completing the training does not make the certification process any easier, as each candidate must meet the rigorous requirements of certification separately.
Course Breakdown:
The Basic Polygraph Examiner's Course offers a structured approach to polygraph education, with flexible timelines ranging from 10 to 17 weeks, depending on the needs of the participants and instructor availability. Our curriculum covers the critical areas required for successful polygraph testing, including instrument operation, interview techniques, and data analysis.

Ethics, Standards of Practice, and By-Laws
This module covers the ethical considerations and standards of practice required for conducting polygraph examinations, with a focus on ISCB’s Code of Ethics and related standards.
Introduction to the History and Evolution of Credibility Assessment
Understand the history and development of credibility assessment, including major contributors to the field, the evolution of polygraph instrumentation, and different credibility assessment techniques.
Scientific Testing
Gain a solid grasp of scientific testing concepts such as sensitivity, specificity, false positives, and false negatives. This module also teaches students how to review research and evaluate its strengths and weaknesses.
Mechanics of Instrument Operation
Master the mechanics of polygraph instrument operation, including proper functionality checks, component placement, software operation, and data collection practices. This hands-on training is essential for accurate and reliable test administration.
Credibility Assessment Techniques
Develop expertise in evidentiary, investigative, and screening examinations. This module covers testing protocols, question sequence rules, and the required number of tests for each scenario.
Pre-Test Interview
Learn the rationale behind pre-test procedures and practice conducting structured, semi-structured, and free-narrative interviews to prepare examinees for polygraph testing.
Post-Test Interview
Understand post-test procedures, including interview approaches and how to handle different test outcomes, allowing you to conduct comprehensive post-test interviews.
Psychology
Explore the basic elements of human psychology and how they apply to credibility assessment, giving you a deeper understanding of examinee behavior during testing.
Physiology
This module covers the physiological systems relevant to polygraph data, including cardiovascular, respiratory, nervous, and muscular systems, as well as the effects of pharmacology on test results.
Test Question Construction
Develop the ability to construct effective and valid test questions for credibility assessment techniques, with an emphasis on both classroom and practical applications.
Test Data Analysis
Learn how to interpret polygraph data using validated scoring systems and decision rules. You'll gain experience in identifying patterns that indicate truthfulness or deception.
Countermeasures
Understand common countermeasures and how to identify atypical physiological responses. This will prepare you to detect attempts to manipulate polygraph results.
Information and Results Reporting
Learn how to present polygraph test results in a clear and accurate manner, ensuring that all relevant information is communicated to stakeholders.
Practical Application of Credibility Assessment / Mock Examinations
Through practical, field-like mock examinations, students will develop basic proficiency in conducting real-world polygraph tests.
